Clinical Psychologist

I am a Specialist Clinical Psychologist and have been in private practice in the Sutherland Shire for the past 21 years, 18 of which have been at GAHC. Prior to this I was the Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Liaison Psychiatry at the Prince of Wales Hospital and Prince Henry Hospital where I consulted to the inpatient wards and several outpatient clinics, including the POW/PHH Multi-disciplinary Pain Clinic. This is where I developed my interest in Medical and Health Psychology into a specialisation. Prior to that time I worked in Community Mental Health in Canberra and Queanbeyan, and Ontario, Canada. Altogether I have been working as a Psychologist for more than 25 years.

I completed my Honours B.A. in Psychology at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in 1984 and my Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology at the Australian National University in 1992 and was awarded a Commonwealth Post Graduate Award for these studies. I completed my Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis in 1994 here in Sydney with the Australian Society of Hypnosis, which is an affiliate of the International Society of Hypnosis.

In order to be a member of the Clinical College of the Australian Psychological Society and registered with Medicare as a Clinical Psychologist, I am required to attend and demonstrate ongoing relevant Professional Development training each year.

As a Clinical Psychologist specialising in Medical and Health Psychology, I diagnose and treat the psychological sequela of medical and health conditions including; Diabetes, chronic pain, chronic illness, eating and weight disorders, sleep disorders sports performance and sports injuries and rehabilitation. I also specialise in treating Anxiety Disorders (Panic, Social Phobia & Specific Phobias, and PTSD) and Depression, especially Bipolar Disorder and Post-Natal Depression. I also treat work related stress, life adjustment stress and grief, and habit disorders.

I work with the client to assess, diagnose and treat these problems. My psychological treatment is cognitive behaviourally based with adjunctive hypnosis if appropriate and externally validated with appropriate measures and criteria. I also use mindfulness based therapy and imagery rehearsal therapy and draw on neuro psychotherapy to master the learning of new behaviours, cognitions, emotional regulation strategies and neural pathways. My treatment is guided and informed by the latest research. I work closely with the other members of our multidisiplinary team and practitioners outside our team to maximise the client's treatment goals.
